Dr. Chintan Desai

Dr. Chintan Desai, BDS, MPH, is a dental public health professional and researcher currently pursuing Advanced Education in Dental Public Health at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He attained his BDS in India and an MPH in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Jackson State University, followed by dental public health residency training at the University of Rochester and clinical research training at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Desai’s work includes clinical dentistry, dental epidemiology, community oral health, and research involving oral health outcomes and artificial intelligence in dentistry. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including Frontiers in Microbiology and Cureus, and he received the Herschel S. Horowitz Scholarship from the AAPHD Foundation for 2026–2027.

Dr. Chintan Desai completed his BDS from North Gujarat University in 2018, followed by an internship at Siddhpur Dental College and Hospital. Additionally, he worked as a School Health Officer with the Government of Gujarat.

He later earned an MPH in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Jackson State University. He completed dental public health training at the University of Rochester and a clinical research fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. He is now pursuing Advanced Education in Dental Public Health at Tufts University.

As part of his residency at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Desai treats patients at the Tufts Special Care Dental Clinics (TSCDC), a program founded in 1976 that provides comprehensive dental care to more than 6,500 patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Massachusetts. Through TSCDC's network of clinics, he delivers specialized dental care to a population that requires providers with particular expertise, patience, and clinical training.

Prior to Tufts, Dr. Desai served as a Research Coordinator in the Community Department at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, where he worked on the Building Dental Homes for School Children (BUDHS) Project and the Dental Connection Study. He has also practiced clinically as a dentist at BIMS Hospital in Gujarat, India, in the Dental Implant and Oral Surgery Department, where he performed restorative and surgical procedures while also managing clinical and financial data for departmental quality control.

His public health career includes work at the Mississippi State Department of Health on statewide efforts to reduce early childhood caries and improve dental visits during pregnancy, as well as research collaboration at the University of Mississippi Medical Center on national inpatient database analyses. He has volunteered extensively in community oral health outreach, including the Center for Tobacco Free Finger Lakes program, numerous health fairs across Rochester, New York, and advocacy efforts supporting community water fluoridation in Albany, NY.

Dr. Chintan Desai has developed a diverse body of scholarly and professional work spanning research, scientific communication, innovation, and academic service. In addition to his research publications, he has contributed to public-facing health communication, participated in innovation and intellectual property activities, and served as a peer reviewer for academic journals.

Dr. Chintan Desai received the Herschel S. Horowitz Scholarship from the American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD) Foundation for 2026–2027. He also received graduate scholarships from Jackson State University during his MPH studies.

He received a Certificate of Excellence in Peer-Reviewing from BP International for 2026–2027. He also served as a judge for the 2025–2026 Conrad Challenge, a STEM and entrepreneurship competition.

Dr. Desai speaks Hindi and Gujarati as his native languages and is proficient in English.

Outside of his professional work, he enjoys traveling, playing and watching cricket, volleyball, and football, and listening to pop music. He maintains a strong interest in the intersection of healthcare and technology, particularly the applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence in dentistry and public health.

In 2024, Chintan Desai volunteered with Kare Mobile Dentistry Clinic during a two-day community outreach event held in partnership with Crest and Oral-B as part of their national "#ClosingAmericasSmiles" campaign. Set up in a Wegmans parking lot, the mobile dental van offered free oral health screenings and patient education to local residents, helping connect underserved community members with essential dental health information and care.
